Hvar or Brač for a Villa Week?

Fifty minutes of car ferry to Brač against an hour of catamaran to Hvar town, and the crossing you pay twice a day decides more of the week than either island's photographs do.

September 8, 2026 Hvar or Brač

Access Adriatic is a private concierge for the Split to Hvar coast. We find the house, shortlist two or three that fit your dates and headcount, you book it with the villa’s own booking office at its published rate, and we arrange the week around it.

Brač and Hvar are neighbours across one channel and they are not the same holiday. Every figure below comes from ferry timetables and villa lists read in September 2026, and none of it is a quote for your dates. The village by village detail is in where to stay on Brač and where to stay on Hvar; this page decides which of the two you should be reading.

Hvar or Brač: what is the short answer for your trip?

Read the row that matches the week you are planning, not the photographs. If two rows disagree, obey the arrival.

What does the crossing cost each week?

Hours and timetables rather than fares, paid twice on every day you leave the house. A blank sailing count means the timetable we read did not print one.

The rule underneath is about cars. Brač takes one across in fifty minutes. Hvar takes 120 minutes to Stari Grad, on the far side of the ridge from Hvar town, which catches out anyone booking a car crossing expecting the harbour. Every fast boat to either island is foot passengers only, so settle the car before you settle the island.

Which island has the houses, and what do they cost?

Brač, by a wide margin. On the villa lists we read in September 2026 it carried roughly twice what Hvar did, which decides whether five bedrooms and a pool exist at all in the first week of August.

Where they sit differs as much as how many. Brač spreads its stock across about eighteen villages, six of them inland, so much of what you are shown is a pool and a view a few minutes above the sea rather than a house you swim from. Hvar concentrates: on one list read in September 2026, twenty one of twenty four houses sat in Hvar town or on the slope above it, and inside the old town you are mostly looking at stone houses with no pool and no parking.

On price, most five bedroom houses with a private pool on this coast run between about EUR 950 and EUR 1,450 a night in high summer, set out in what a villa week in Croatia costs to rent. Hvar sits at the upper end of that band. We have no verified Brač rate with a month attached, so we will not print one.

Minimum stays are the same on both: five to seven nights from June to September, and the arrival day can be as fixed as the length. If you need three or four nights in high summer, say so in your first message.

Which has the water and the boat days?

Hvar for the days out, Brač for one famous beach and a shorter run to everything.

Hvar town sits about fifteen minutes off the Pakleni Islands by taxi boat, which is as close as this coast comes to putting swimming water at the end of your own harbour. The south side at Sveta Nedjelja, Ivan Dolac and Zavala has the cliffs and the light, reached through a one lane tunnel at Pitve of about 1.4 kilometres where traffic takes turns.

Brač answers with Zlatni Rat, the pebble spit at Bol that runs about 500 metres into the channel and changes shape with the wind. The same afternoon breeze that shapes it supports four surf centres, so swim in the morning and sail after lunch. From a Brač quay you are already on water other people cross the channel to reach.

Days out from each are on private boat tours from Bol and private boat tours from Hvar. Tell us which quay you will sleep nearest, because the day is built outward from it.

Which is better for families, and which for a big night?

Brač for the children, Hvar for the night, and the two are less opposed than that sounds.

Brač wins the family question on logistics: a fifty minute car ferry to Supetar, the shortest island car crossing from Split, and enough houses that five bedrooms and a fenced pool in your week is a real search rather than a hope. Supetar to Bol is 37 kilometres, about an hour on the bus, so take a car unless the house is inside Bol or Supetar.

Hvar’s family answer is Jelsa on the north shore, where Grebišće, 1.5 kilometres from town, is a sandy bottomed bay that stays knee deep for fifty metres and the streets are flat.

For a big night there is no second place. Hvar town is the only settlement on either island with late bars as a matter of course, and Stari Grad and Jelsa sit over the ridge, about twenty minutes by road, for the half of the group that wants sleep.

So if the group splits on this, put the house on Hvar’s north shore and let the late night be a drive.

Can you do both in one week?

Usually yes, and it is often better than choosing.

The common shape is a house on Brač with one Hvar day in it. Brač’s south coast faces Hvar, and Jadrolinija’s line 9603 catamaran runs Split to Bol in an hour and five minutes then carries on to Jelsa, and on the 2026 peak timetable the Bol to Jelsa leg is about half an hour. Foot passengers only, so the car stays on Brač.

The reverse works from Hvar’s north shore rather than Hvar town, because Stari Grad, Jelsa and Vrboska look back at Brač.

A private boat does the same crossing on your own timing instead of the timetable’s. If both islands are in the week, say so in your first message, because it pulls the house towards Bol or towards Jelsa and Vrboska and away from either far end.

What should you send us?

Dates or the month, how many nights, how many people and how many bedrooms, whether the island is settled, whether a pool, sea access or walking home from dinner is the thing you will not give up, whether a boat is in the week, and the budget, per night or in total.

We come back with two or three houses that fit, each with the total for your nights and what sits on top. You book the house with the villa’s own booking office at its published rate, and we arrange the boat days, the chef and the drivers around it.

Request Villa Options on find a villa. If the choice is wider than these two, which island near Split is best for a villa week is the question that comes before this one.

FAQ

Guide questions

Which is nicer, Brač or Hvar?

They are nice at different things, and the honest split is the crossing against the evening. Brač is the closer of the two, fifty minutes by car ferry from Split to Supetar against 120 minutes to Stari Grad on Hvar, it is the largest island in Dalmatia at 396 square kilometres, and it carries roughly twice Hvar's rental houses on the lists we read in September 2026. Hvar is sixty eight kilometres long, far better known, and the only island near Split with a town that stays up late. If the week has to work first time, Brač. If the week has one big night and a Pakleni day in it, Hvar.

Which is better for families, Hvar or Brač?

Brač, on the practical points rather than the pretty ones. The Split to Supetar car ferry is fifty minutes, the shortest island car crossing from Split, with 14 sailings a day in summer, so a group landing at different hours sorts itself out. It also has far more houses, which is what decides whether five bedrooms and a fenced pool exist at all in the week you want. Hvar's family answer is Jelsa on the north shore, where Grebišće is a sandy bottomed bay 1.5 kilometres from town that stays knee deep for fifty metres, and the streets are flat. On either island you want a car unless the house is inside Bol, Supetar, Hvar town or Stari Grad.

Which is cheaper for a villa week?

Brač on the evidence we have, though not by a figure we will print. Coast wide, most five bedroom houses with a private pool run between about EUR 950 and EUR 1,450 a night in high summer, and Hvar sits at the upper end of that band. We have no verified Brač rate with a month attached, so we quote none. What we can say is that on both islands the cheaper houses are the ones a few minutes back from the water, and that moving the week to early September takes more off the total than moving down an island does. Ask each house for the total for your exact nights with cleaning, the deposit and the tourist tax named.

Can you do both in one week?

Yes, and from Bol it is a short hop. Brač's south coast faces Hvar, and Jadrolinija's line 9603 catamaran runs Split to Bol in an hour and five minutes then carries on to Jelsa, and on the 2026 peak season timetable the Bol to Jelsa leg is about half an hour. It takes foot passengers only, so the car stays where it is. The usual shape is a house on Brač with one Hvar day in it, or a house on Hvar's north shore with a Bol day, and a private boat does either on your own timing rather than the timetable's.

Which island is easier to reach from Split airport?

Brač, whichever way you travel. Split airport is about 25 kilometres from the Split ferry port, 30 to 40 minutes by road, and from there the car ferry to Supetar is 50 minutes on Jadrolinija line 631 with 14 sailings a day in summer, or about 20 minutes on the Krilo catamaran, foot passengers only. Hvar town is fifty minutes to an hour by catamaran on line 641, also foot passengers only, and a car has to take the 120 minute ferry to Stari Grad on the other side of the island. Brač also has a small airport at Gornji Humac, about ten minutes from Bol, flown by Croatia Airlines and Sky Alps. If people are landing at different hours, Brač absorbs it better.
